Based on recent Lands of America data, Virginia ranks seventh in the nation for the combined number of land listings currently for sale in the state. By overall acreage of land for sale, Virginia ranks 18th. Recent internal data lists about $9 billion in land and rural real estate for sale in the Old Dominion. This represents a total of 485,738 acres of Virginia land for sale. Of the 133 counties in the state, Franklin County had the most land and farms for sale. There were 756 acres of sold land in Virginia recorded in December through the Lands of America sales program. This reflects a decline in sales activity over data from the month before. The total value of this sold land and rural real estate was $8 million. The most land sales in the state last month were located in Rockbridge, Shenandoah County. Virginia's 40 wildlife management areas total more than 200,000 acres, in addition to the state's other public hunting lands. Big-game species include black bear, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and elk. Over 2,300 miles of wild trout streams beckon anglers in Virginia's Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains. WalletHub, a personal finance website, has ranked the state among the ten best states for retirees based on factors including affordability, quality of life and health care. In terms of its size, Virginia is the country's 35th-largest state, covering an area of 42,769 square miles (27 million acres). In total, 39,490 square miles covers land area, while the remaining 3,285 square miles comprises water. Wildlife species to be found on land for sale in Virginia include whitetail deer, turkey, bear, ducks, and dove. Fishermen have their choice of bass, catfish, trout, pike, and walleye.
